Less Is More

This is a common saying thrown around in a wide variety of discussions and topics. However, in the world of web design….the idea of less being more (especially to your customers) is one of the truest statements out there. How you ask? The shifting trends in the web design world especially since the beginning of 2011 is that the less you do on your web page, the easier it is for your customers to understand you, and you are easily able to get your companies main points out. Many of the popular companies out there have shifted their website to reflect this change. So how do you give less while maintaining the essentials?
Well there is no EASY answer to this question because you cannot give a general answer for a question like this. This is the type of question that is very specific to what you or your company does, but there are some general rules of thumb to follow to ensure that your website is achieving this on a successful note:

  • Minimal Text – Let’s be real….nobody likes to read or wants to read. All your website essentially needs is a few lines of text, some big titles, and that will make a HUGE difference on your website.
  • Visuals – Everyone wants to visualize your company, or your ideas, or your product, or whatever else your website may have to be. Images, videos, and graphics are the best way to achieve this because its less stressful on the visitor since they can just “look” and learn.
  • Colors – Use colors that represent your company, industry, and products. This is as simple as it gets. If you’re trying to sell kitchen-ware….”black” would be a horrible choice because you are giving your cutlery a dark and mysterious effect right off the bat.
  • Strategic Icons – Placement of icons such as “Buy Now” …or “Order Now” are crucial if you want to be successful. Make them too small and you go unnoticed, make them too big and you come off desperate….place icons in adequate places while maintaining a decent size.

Overall, the list above isn’t the complete handbook of how to make a website with “less” while gaining a higher appeal with your customers. These are just some of the basic things anyone can do to ensure that they are on the right track. A lot of things like this is really industry dependent, but in short you just have to make sure you convey your company’s ideas in as short form as possible.
